Must Try Fish Fry

The good ole' Friday Fish Fry, the season is finally upon us. In episode 23 we have our very first fish fry review episode and it will not be our last, we plan on making this a seasonal feature. As part of the feature we will continue to build this list so our followers have access to a resource with honest reviews. As we shared in the episode Lisa enjoys fish and seafood, while Angela on the other hand does not eat seafood besides usually a very occasional "fish and chips".

Buckatabon Tavern & Supper Club 7700 Harwood Ave., Wauwatosa

2024 Pricing: $18.95 (Haddock), $19.95 (Perch), $27.95 (Walleye)

Served with: potato pancakes, apple sauce, tartar sauce, creamy buttermilk coleslaw, rye bread, and lemon.

Review: We both really enjoyed our fish dinners and felt the amount of food was worth the expense. Lisa ordered the perch and Angela ordered the haddock, the server noted that the haddock was similar to cod which is the only type of fish Angela has had before! We also substituted for no additional cost the potato pancakes/apple sauce for fries with Lisa's order. The breading was the same on the two types of fish which was delicious and well seasoned, the biggest difference was the cut of the fish fillets and the fish to batter ratio. Haddock had a thick cut of fish with more batter and the haddock was thinner with less. The tarter sauce was to die for and we had to ask for more! The coleslaw was creamy but still had a little tang. We both prefer a more creamy coleslaw and enjoyed it. The potato pancakes had a crisp outside and were really good with the apple sauce or ketchup, whichever is more your style!

Score: 10/10 recommend and would return again

Crawdaddy's on Greenfield 9427 W Greenfield Ave, West Allis

2024 Pricing: $17 Icelandic Cod Loin

Served with: fries, cole slaw, and tarter sauce - you can substitute the fries additional fees may apply

Additional Notes: served Fridays only

Review: We both felt it was great portion sizes. The server described the fish loin as an 8oz fish "burrito" which was a great description. This was one huge piece of fish. Lisa and Angela shared different reviews on the fish. Lisa really liked the fish, the large piece had a small amount of batter in terms of fish/batter ratio. Angela felt it was too much "fish" it was good but not something she would order again personally. For a side we substituted the mac and cheese which we highly recommend! It was super cheesy and made a great side. The cole slaw was good but not of the creamy variety.

Score: 8/10 with combing both scores

The Gingerbread House S63W16147 College Ave., Muskego

2024 Pricing: $14.50 Traditional Cod Fish Fry, $4 to add additional pieces

Served with: choice of potato pancakes or potato wedges, coleslaw, rye bread, and tartar

Additional notes: they offer other fish options on Fridays as well (shrimp fry, fish and shrimp combo, italian fish fry, baked cod, lake perch, glazed salmon, walleye) They only serve this fish based menu and pizza on Fridays they do not have any of their regular menu items.

Review: Angela was unable to attend, Lisa went with a guest and here is the review. The fish was good, battered in tempura. The tarter sauce was a standard sauce. She went with the potato pancakes which did come with a side of apple sauce as well. The potato pancakes were more of a hash brown texture and the apple sauce was smooth.

Score: 7/10
